About me

My name is Newo Chandith

I am a student at Avans University of Applied Sciences, pursuing a degree in Communication and Multimedia Design (CMD).

As a designer, my passion lies in storytelling through critical and speculative design. I strive to create immersive experiences that challenge users’ perspectives and encourage them to question the systems and structures that shape their world.

Drawing inspiration from my background and personal experiences, I often address societal issues, such as the healthcare crisis and environmental sustainability, using interactive and thought-provoking mediums like games and wearable technology. My work combines playful and approachable concepts with deeper narratives, sparking conversations about pressing topics and potential futures.

From designing visual assets that enrich storytelling to crafting mechanisms that embody meaningful metaphors, I aim to connect people emotionally to the stories I tell. I see design as a tool for both reflection and change, inviting users to see the world—and themselves—from a new point of view.

Artisan

Even though I’m drawn to themes like critical design and storytelling, at my core, I remain an artisan. I have a deep passion for working with my hands and take pride in crafting pieces that evoke awe and curiosity in those who see and interact with them. My goal is to create work that invites people to engage, touch, and explore.

Over the years, I’ve honed my skills across a wide range of crafts, including sewing, sculpting, illustrating, and painting. This diverse background has made me an all-around artist, capable of drawing inspiration from various principles and techniques. This versatility not only enriches my designs but also allows me to bring unique perspectives to everything I create.

Storytelling

Storytelling can take many forms, and my approach focuses on immersing people in the environment through environmental storytelling. This includes creating detailed backgrounds, crafting worlds, and exploring how people would interact within those scenarios. By designing immersive settings, I aim to help users connect emotionally with the narrative and question the systems and perspectives within that world.

I bring these stories to life through a variety of media, including illustration, 3D modeling, and even costuming. Each medium allows me to convey different aspects of the narrative, enriching the experience and inviting deeper engagement with the story.

experimental

I don’t like to limit myself to what I already know—I’m always looking to expand my knowledge and skill set. Being experimental allows me to think outside the box and approach challenges from fresh perspectives.

I enjoy delving into new avenues, such as exploring coding and mechanics, and combining them with traditional techniques like puppetry. By drawing inspiration from a wide range of crafts and disciplines, I’m able to merge the old with the new, creating unique and innovative designs that push boundaries and spark curiosity.
